Table Mountain named Africa’s leading tourist attraction

Date: Oct 22, 2021

Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain in South Africa (SA) has been voted as Africa’s leading tourist attraction by the 2021 World Travel Awards (WTA). It’s held this top spot since 2019.

October is a special month for Table Mountain and the Mother City. The Table Mountain Cableway, first opened on October 4, 1929, celebrates its 92nd birthday and has been nominated as the World’s leading Cable Car, with voting ending on Sunday.

Table Mountains' reign at the top comes on the back of multiple awards for Cape Town in 2021. The city has also been named Africa's leading city destination and its airport voted as the continent's best.

Table Mountain’s award, announced on Thursday by the WTA, comes at just the right time, as international travel bans, lockdown restrictions, and Covid-19 infections ease.

“This award could not have been announced at a better time,” said Wahida Parker, Managing Director of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC).

Table Mountain beat out some fierce competitors to retain its pole position in 2021. Other African attractions nominated for the award included Mountain Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, and the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Two other SA favourites, Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront were also runners up. But the big prize, of world glory, still lies ahead for both Table Mountain and the cableway.

The TMACC is coming up against stiff competition in the world category, including Bondinho Pão de Açúcar in Brazil, the Cable Car at Sun World Ba Na Hills in Vietnam, the Disney Skyliner Cable Car in the United States, Mi Teleférico in Bolivia, Peak 2 Peak 360 in Canada, the Skyline Queenstown in New Zealand, and the Wings of Tatev in Armenia.

Table Mountain is also in the running for the world’s leading tourist attraction. Other attractions nominated include the Great Wall of China, Grand Canyon National Park, the Taj Mahal in India, and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

There are a total of 17 nominees in this global category. Voting ends on October 24 and the winner will be announced on November 26.
