South Africa's mining industry holds a meeting to save jobs

Date: Aug 31, 2015

South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources, the mining industry and unions are holding a top-level meeting to find ways to save jobs in the sector.

Mining giant, Lonmin announced last week that over one-thousand-400 miners had taken voluntary retrenchment, as it prepares to retrench a total of six-thousand by the end of the year. Other major mining companies are also planning lay-offs. South Africa's economy shrank by one-point-three percent in the second quarter of this year, as the manufacturing and mining sectors continue to struggle.
