Freedom Charter 60th Celebrations

South Africa Celebrates 60 years of the Freedom Charter

South Africa’s ruling party - The African National Congress is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Freedom Charter, a historic document which was campaigned amongst South Africans in 1955 and later adopted by the ANC.

The Freedom Charter comprised what the people of South Africa wanted any legitimate government to achieve.

This document has continued to be a guiding document for the ANC's led government in its service delivery programme.

According to the ANC, the Freedom Charter is a dynamic document that shows that government listens to its people.

The document has been used as a foundation in drafting the National Development Plan (NDP)

The National Development Plan (NDP) offers a long-term perspective. It defines a desired destination and identifies the role different sectors of society need to play in reaching that goal. The NDP aims to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by 2030. According to the plan, South Africa can realise these goals by drawing on the energies of its people, growing an inclusive economy, building capabilities, enhancing the capacity of the state, and promoting leadership and partnerships throughout society.

In recognising the importance of the Freedom Charter, the ANC has declared 2015 as "The year of the Freedom Charter and Unity in action to advance Economic Freedom"

Today’s event was addressed by the ANC alliance structures and South Africa‘s President Jacob Zuma  delivered the keynote address.
