Electricity a concern as Nigerians head to the polls

Date: Mar 27, 2015

As Nigerians head to the polls on Saturday, their concerns range from insecurity, corruption, high inflation and unemployment. One pressing need for the country's economy is electricity.

Half of the country's population has no access to electricity and those who have, experience long black outs.

At the moment, Africa's largest oil producer is facing an acute fuel shortage which is crippling the transport sector.

Nigeria must deal with its power generation infrastructure if it is to remain competitive. Power generation companies supply 3800MW for a population of 150 million people.

Many businesses in Nigeria are powered through oil generators. At least 60 million Nigerians depend on generators.

Those who have electricity suffers daily black outs -lasting up to seven hours. Unreliable power supply hampers Nigeria's competitiveness - alternative power generation is a fixed cost for anyone who sets up a business here.

Both front runners in the presidential race have pledged to improve electricity related infrastructure.
