Date: Feb 12, 2024

President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa’s new work visa regulations send a strong signal that the government is committed to attracting skills for producing a modern, inclusive and growing economy.

In his weekly letter to the nation, Ramaphosa says the new work visa regulations represent high-impact structural reforms aimed at promoting investment and job creation

To attract international skills, the draft legislation proposes changes such as a remote working visa and amendments to the critical skills visa. These are designed to attract professionals in short supply, such as engineers, technicians, science and maths teachers and IT experts.

Ramaphosa notes that international experience shows that employees with critical skills contribute to improved productivity, innovation and competitiveness of the companies they work for.

A ‘Trusted Employer Scheme’, for corporates is also aimed at making the visa process easier for large investors and streamlining application requirements.
