Eliminating FGM is part of the goal on women's empowerment and gender equality adopted last year as part of the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals by all UN member states.
According to the UN Children's Fund, at least 200 million women and girls alive today have undergone female genital mutilation or "cutting" in some 30 countries, many in Africa.
