Mozambique President to stand for re-election in 2019

Date: Oct 3, 2017

Mozambique’s President Filip Nyusi will run for re-election in the 2019 elections, his ruling Frelimo party said in a move intended as a step towards a vote meant to end continuing clashes, according to a Reuters report late Monday.

Renamo opposition party leader, Afonso Dhlakama, will be Nyusi’s political opponent as the two square-off after years of fighting between government forces and Renamo supporters following the disputed election three years ago.

Dhlakama had been hiding in the Gorongosa mountains with hundreds of his fighters until both leaders met for the first time in August 2015 raising hopes of a resolution to the conflict. “It is an urgent task that belongs to everyone, regardless of political affiliation, religious or social position,” Nyusi tells delegates at the ruling party’s conference.

Mozambique is currently on the verge of developing huge offshore gas reserves and competition over natural resources is believed to be one of the factors exacerbating the continued conflict. A civil war between the two sides from 1975 to 1992 killed approximately 1 million people.
