Democratic process in the selection of the next UN Secretary General expected

The Elders' has made a strong push for a more transparent and democratic process in the selection of the next UN Secretary General.

 At an event hosted by ACT - the Accountability, Coherence and Transparency Group of 21 countries at the United Nations - founding member of The Elders Mary Robinson made the case for a complete overhaul of the current selection process. She slammed it as morally inexcusable to allow a process to stand that places the selection of the next UN Chief solely in the hands of the five permanent members of the Security Council.
