Egyptian butcher takes to selling ostrich oil for medical benefits.

Date: Mar 9, 2018

A formidable opponent if ever challenged, ostriches are a treasure trove of health benefits, according to farmers and physicians alike.

An Egyptian farmer who breeds ostriches, Wagih Ghoneimy, says everything from the birds' feathers, to the meat, and even its fat are useful.

Butcher Karim Gad, who regularly buys ostriches from Ghoneimy, has started selling ostrich fat in the form of oils and creams.

Gad melts the fat in his apartment and packages it in small bottles to sell to clients and local herb shops.

One such customer, Aliaa Zaghloul, has tried the oil on her two children and her own hair, and says it has made it softer and removed dandruff.

While ostrich meat is a well-known alternative for people suffering from high cholesterol, the fat surrounding the muscles is also very rich in benefits.

Ostrich oil is said to contain Omega 3 and 6, as well as nine fatty acids, known to have therapeutic benefits for the heart, hair, skin, and nails.

The natural oil can also be used to soothe aches and pain in the neck or muscles, as well as easing joint pain.

Although, some people believe in the benefits of ostrich oil, a doctor specialising in alternative medicine, Abdelaty El-Mannaee, thinks more research should be done on the use of the oil as an alternative to chemicals.
