Laywers instructed to force President Zuma to release Marikana report

Date: May 25, 2015

Lawyers representing miners who were injured during the Marikana shootings at Lonmin in 2012 have confirmed that they have been instructed by their clients to seek a court order forcing President Jacob Zuma to release the Marikana Commission report.

President Zuma said last week he was mulling over the report and suggested it would not be released soon.

Lawyer Andries Nkome says the Presidency did not heed a request to release the report by Sunday.

“Clients that we represent feel as though the people that are fingered in the report are being protected like we have heard in previous weeks.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega  has been made an offer to leave her office; we have also heard that North West Police Commissioner Zukiswa Mbombo is actually going to be retiring at the end of the month.

So, therefore it seems as if the Presidency is assisting in making sure that people that are supposed to be culprits of the report, are the ones that are being moved over to other positions.”
