Channel Africa heeds the call for 67 Minutes of Madiba

Channel Africa heeds the call for 67 Minutes of Madiba

Channel Africa staff will on Tuesday, 18 July 2017; swap their microphones and laptops with brushes and garden tools in a variety of activities such as painting and cleaning at the Yeoville Community School in Yeoville.  According to Channel Africa Marketing Manager, Mamolefe Segakweng, the staff will also donate books and socks to the pupil.  “This is a school that’s close to our hearts because it accommodates pupils from the continent and have been displaced because of civil wars and natural disasters such as drought”, added Mamolefe.

Move It Moving Matters together with the German Embassy will supply the paints and brushes.  The Channel Africa team will be joined by journalism students from University of Johannesburg who will profile the event for their magazine. Nissan South Africa is supporting this initiative by contributing school shoes, socks and stationary for the pupils.

Channel Africa General Manager, Solly Phetoe, appeals to all staff members including audiences, to heed Tata Nelson Mandela’s call to change the world around them during this Mandela Month.

Tata Mandela’s birthday, 18 July, was declared the Nelson Mandela International Day, commonly known as Mandela Day, following a unanimous resolution by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009. However, in South Africa the month of July is set aside for everyone to honour his life by taking action to make the world a better place.

To commemorate this month in a manner that takes the legacy of the selfless leader of the people forward, Channel Africa has dedicated most of its programmes at touching the lives of Africans, as the station’s main target audience is the Sub-Sahara Africa.  Three years ago, Channel Africa planted trees at the same school.
