Remembering Queen Mother Sirikit, who passed away. Known for her elegance and grace

Thailand is remembering Queen Mother Sirikit, who passed away on Friday at the age of 93. Known for her elegance and grace, she was a figure who combined glamour with a deep commitment to her country and its people.

Sirikit captured the world’s attention wherever she went. During a 1960 visit to the United States, Time magazine praised her poise, while French newspapers called her “ravishing.” She worked with French designer Pierre Balmain to create stunning outfits from Thai silk, helping to revive a centuries-old craft and putting Thai textiles on the international fashion map.

Born in 1932, Sirikit met King Bhumibol Adulyadej while studying in Paris. Their love story began with a playful first encounter and led to marriage when she was just 17. Together, they travelled the world and won hearts through charity work, public engagements, and a visible presence in Thai society.

Sirikit also devoted herself to rural development, visiting remote villages to support education, health, and livelihoods, work often shown on national television. She briefly acted as regent in 1956 and occasionally engaged in political matters, though she remained primarily a symbol of unity and maternal care for her nation.

Her birthday, August 12, is celebrated as Thailand’s Mother’s Day, reflecting her role as a beloved national figure. Even in mourning, life in Thailand continues with respect; public offices fly flags at half-mast, and events such as Blackpink concerts ask fans to wear black and white in her honour.

Sirikit leaves behind a legacy of compassion, style, and service, a queen mother whose influence touched both her country and the wider world.
