This year’s Nairobi Fashion Week is putting sustainability at the forefront

This year’s Nairobi Fashion Week is putting sustainability at the forefront, with designers embracing the theme “Decarbonise” to draw attention to the environmental impact of Kenya’s booming second-hand clothing industry.

The country’s influx of used garments has led to growing piles of textile waste at urban dumpsites, prompting calls for more environmentally responsible practices. The fashion week aims to showcase how local designers are finding creative ways to reuse materials, reduce waste, and lower the carbon footprint of their work.

Organisers say the event offers a platform to promote eco-friendly design, raise awareness about the environmental cost of discarded clothing, and encourage a shift towards sustainable fashion in Kenya.
