Liberia’s Former President, cabinet Ministers honoured with symbolic reburial

Current President of Liberia, Joseph Boakai and other dignitaries are expected to attend the national event, which is being described as a gesture of reconciliation and healing.

Tolbert was murdered in April 1980 when soldiers stormed the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, ending his Presidency. Ten days later, 13 senior officials in his administration were tried by a so-called kangaroo court, stripped, tied to stakes and executed by firing squad on a beach near an army barracks in the capital.

None of the 14 bodies has ever been recovered, but the symbolic ceremony is intended to help Liberia confront its violent past and offer closure to families who have waited decades for accountability and remembrance.
