Alene, the winner of the Stockholm Marathon in May, fell ill during a training session and was rushed to hospital, where she tragically passed away, organisers confirmed.
A seasoned competitor, Alene took part in 27 professional marathons between 2011 and 2025, securing 12 victories. She recorded her personal best of 2:27:26 in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2023.
Alene’s triumph in Stockholm was her most recent major competition, and her sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the long-distance running community.
