About 20 supporters of Uganda’s National Unity Platform (NUP) were arrested early this week as the party’s leader held a campaign rally in Mityana District.
Abedi Jean dela Croix spoke to correspondent Cassius Ochokombege in Kampala, Uganda, who began by giving more details on the incident.
Ochokombege explained that the arrests occurred as police attempted to disperse a crowd that had gathered to listen to NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine. The police accused some supporters of violating public order regulations, while NUP officials described the arrests as part of ongoing intimidation by state security agencies.
According to local media, tensions remain high in parts of central Uganda as opposition parties continue to face restrictions on political gatherings ahead of the next general election.
Authorities have not yet commented on the whereabouts of the detained supporters.
