Zambia’s Police Chief warns opposition party against planned protests

Zambia’s Inspector General of Police, Raphael Musamba, has warned the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) party, formerly led by the late Edgar Chagwa Lungu, that the law will take its course if the party goes ahead with its planned nationwide demonstrations.

The PF has announced plans to stage protests across the country to express dissatisfaction with Robert Chabinga, leader of one of the party’s breakaway factions.

Musamba cautioned that while citizens have the right to assemble, demonstrations must comply with the country’s Public Order Act. He emphasised that the police will not hesitate to act against anyone who disrupts public order.

The ongoing divisions within the PF continue to deepen following internal disputes over leadership, which have fuelled tensions between rival factions.
