Record number of nations win medals at World Athletics Championships in Tokyo

Samoa, Saint Lucia, and Uruguay earned their first ever World Championships medals this year, highlighting the growing global competitiveness of the sport.

Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis set a new world record in the pole vault, clearing 6.30 metres, the 14th time he has broken the mark.

American sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden achieved a remarkable sprint treble, winning the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. Kenyan distance runner Beatrice Chebet and Spanish race walker Maria Perez each secured double gold in individual events.

A total of 619 288 fans attended the championships, a stark contrast to the 2021 Olympics held at the same venue, which were staged without crowds due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
