Drone attack near Khartoum International Airport delays reopening in Sudan

A drone attack was reported near Khartoum International Airport this Tuesday, just a day before the airport was due to reopen for domestic flights for the first time in over two years.

Witnesses told the AFP news agency they heard drones buzzing overhead, followed by multiple explosions in the area surrounding the airport early on Tuesday morning. Images circulating on social media, which have not yet been independently verified, appear to show a series of blasts. At this stage, there is no confirmation of casualties or the extent of the damage.

The airport, Sudan’s busiest, has been closed since intense fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces 30 months ago. The facility sustained heavy damage, and repair work has been ongoing for months.

Sudan’s Civil Aviation Authority had planned to reopen the airport for domestic flights on Wednesday. Tuesday’s attack now casts doubt on whether that schedule will be met.
