The leaders of Madagascar’s Gen Z movement, whose mass protests helped oust President Andry Rajoelina, have voiced their disapproval of the Prime Minister appointed by the country’s new ruler.
Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who led last week’s coup, was sworn in as head of state on Friday. On Monday, he announced the appointment of businessman Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as Prime Minister.
However, in a statement posted on Facebook, the Gen Z Mada movement criticised the decision, saying it was made in a non-transparent manner and without public consultation. The group added that the appointment contradicts the structural and generational changes they had been advocating for.
The Gen Z movement has been a driving force behind recent political upheavals in Madagascar, calling for a break from traditional politics and greater accountability in governance.
