SA Police Minister questioned about alleged links to criminal underworld

Mchunu who was placed on special leave is appearing before Parliament’s Ad Hoc committee, looking into allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system, made by the KwaZulu-Natal province Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Among others, Mkhwanazi alleged that top police officers and Mchunu are involved with criminal syndicates. The committee has heard that Mchunu obtained an affidavit from Matlala, who faces attempted murder charges, to confirm that they have no relations. But Malema questioned why, Mchunu felt the need to get the confirmation from someone who is behind bars..
“Who you get affidavits from matters, you can’t just get a affidavit from questionable characters, people who are behind bars. as a police minister you should know even if this is not legally wrong you should know it will raise questions. which gave rise to this situation we find ourselves in, if you had not pursued anything from Matlala, worse in maximum prison where it should be difficult to access him,” he said.
