UN Guterres heads to Egypt for Middle East Peace Summit focused on Gaza ceasefire

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres is set to travel to Egypt today to attend the Middle East Peace Summit, where discussions will centre on implementing the Gaza ceasefire and securing the release of hostages held in the enclave, potentially as early as Monday.

Around 20 world leaders, including United States President Donald Trump, are expected to gather in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. The summit aims to build momentum around the recently brokered truce and advance efforts towards lasting peace in the region.

Monday’s session will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Trump, whose mediation has been credited as instrumental in securing the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel.

According to Egypt’s Presidency, the high-level meeting will seek to consolidate efforts to end the conflict in Gaza, promote regional stability, and lay the groundwork for a new era of cooperation in the Middle East.

Leaders and Foreign Ministers from across Europe, Asia, and the Arab world are also expected to take part in the talks.
