President Biya tells voters ‘the best is yet to come’ as Cameroon heads to polls

Cameroon’s long-serving President, Paul Biya, has told voters that “the best is still to come” as he seeks an eighth consecutive term in office.

The 92-year-old leader, who has governed since 1982, remains the world’s oldest sitting head of state.

If re-elected, Biya would extend his rule to nearly 50 years, an era that has seen him outlast multiple political transitions across the continent. His long hold on power, analysts say, stems in part from a divided opposition that has struggled to form a united front against him.

As Cameroonians cast their votes, the spotlight is on whether the veteran leader can continue to steer the country amid ongoing economic challenges and tensions in the English-speaking regions.

Reporting from Yaoundé, Channel Africa’s Pamela Koumba says the atmosphere in the capital is one of cautious anticipation as the nation awaits the outcome.
