Cachalia was presenting recommendations from the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Panel at the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation’s Annual Drakensberg Inclusive Growth Forum.
His remarks follow revelations of large-scale looting at Tembisa Hospital, where over $114 million was allegedly siphoned through irregular tenders. Cachalia says the Office of Public Integrity could work closely with affected communities to tackle corruption.
“it will have the power to conduct public inquiries. imagine how powerful it would be to hold one right in Tembisa, hearing directly from the community. it will also have the power of search and seizure, and to refer criminal evidence to the investigating directorate against corruption in the National Prosecuting Authority. The office will be able to make policy recommendations and monitor corruption trends on an ongoing basis,” Cachalia said.
