SA pharmacists will now provide HIV medications

The South African (SA) Pharmacy Council has announced that trained pharmacists for the “Pharmacist Initiated Management of Antiretroviral Therapy” also known as PIMART, will now provide HIV medications, including Post Exposure Prophylaxis, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and Antiretrovirals.

This follows the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) dismissing an appeal by the IPA Foundation, an association representing a group of medical practitioners, seeking to stop the implementation of PIMART, following the 2023 North Gauteng Province High Court ruling.

The SA Pharmacy Council says that SCA’s recent ruling confirms that PIMART is a necessary designed intervention programme to support South Africa’s fight against HIV and Aids.

The regulator of the pharmacy profession in the country says the expanded access to HIV and AIDS treatment will now be a reality after the court judgment.
