Hundreds of Botswana nationals hoping to work in the United Kingdom (UK) are facing fresh uncertainty after the British government announced that citizens of the southern African nation will now require visas to enter the country.
In recent years, a growing number of Batswana have travelled to the UK in search of better opportunities, as economic challenges at home, including weaker diamond sales and limited job prospects, continue to take a toll.
The British government said the decision is part of broader efforts to manage migration and strengthen its border controls.
Speaking in Gaborone on Thursday, British High Commissioner to Botswana, Giles Enticknap, confirmed the new measure, saying it reflects London’s intention to ensure “a fair and well-regulated entry system.”
The announcement has caused concern among many Batswana who had been preparing to travel to the UK for employment and study.
