UNICEF has cited education inequality and socio-economic conditions. More than one-million candidates across the three assessment bodies have registered to write the National Senior Certificate. This comes after the country’s education quality watchdog, Umalusi, gave the green light for the exams beginning next week. UNICEF Head of Education, Hana Yoshimoto says Grade 12 learners face a number of challenges.“I think although the system is deemed ready for the 2025 matric exams, it’s not really a very easy, clear yes and no answer about the readiness because when you look at the individual learners’ level, how ready they are, it’s not as a straightforward answer one may wish,” Yoshimoto said.
