Madagascar MP lambastes AU for criticising new military leadership from afar

The African Union has suspended Madagascar following a military takeover that removed President Andry Rajoelina from power. Colonel Michael Randrianirina was sworn in as President at the Constitutional Court in the capital, Antananarivo following weeks of youth-led protests demanding accountability from the ousted government. Rabenirina says the new leader’s installation is legal.

“This is just misunderstanding, but we have noticed that there were foreign ambassadors who attended the ceremony this morning. There was the U.S. ambassador, the French ambassador, Japanese ambassador, the European ambassador, the Chinese ambassador, and so many ambassadors, diplomatic representatives that recognized the regime. For us, it just, they (AU) just need time to really see what’s really happening in the country. And the ambassadors live here, who work here, who see the real situation here, will report to them,” he said.
