South Africa’s Makazole Mapimpi has been handed a five-match suspension following a red card incident during the Sharks’ United Rugby Championship (URC) match against Ulster in Durban.

The decision rules him out of the Springboks’ standby squad for their November tour, as well as the Sharks’ upcoming URC clash against the Scarlets.

The incident occurred in the 55th minute of the Sharks’ 34-26 loss to Ulster when Mapimpi was sent off for a dangerous tip tackle on fullback Mike Lowry. The URC disciplinary committee reviewed the matter and deemed the foul play serious enough to warrant a six-week ban. However, the suspension was reduced to five matches after Mapimpi accepted responsibility for his actions.

Mapimpi’s absence will be a blow to both the Sharks and the national team, given his experience and attacking prowess on the wing.
