Africa is struggling with an alarming surge in humanitarian crises driven by armed conflicts

The Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Gilles Carbonnier, is in Ethiopia this week for discussions with the African Union Peace and Security Council and regional authorities on the growing humanitarian challenges facing the continent.

Carbonnier says Africa is struggling with an alarming surge in humanitarian crises driven by armed conflicts, natural disasters and political instability, factors that have displaced millions and cut off access to essential services.

“We are working in Africa in over 50 active armed conflicts,” Carbonnier said. “This marks a 45% increase in the number of armed conflicts over the past five years. About 40% of all active conflicts globally are now in Africa.”

He added that many of these crises remain neglected by the international community, stressing that Africa remains a top priority for the ICRC.

“It is absolutely essential to uphold the norms enshrined in international humanitarian law,” Carbonnier said, highlighting the need to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian access in conflict zones.

The ICRC continues to operate across the continent, providing medical care, supporting displaced communities and advocating for the protection of those affected by violence.
