The South African (SA) Society of Psychiatrists has warned that SA Police Service (SAPS) officers are suffering from extreme stress.
A shocking report reveals that one police officer dies by suicide every week in SA.
During the 2024/2025 reporting period, 54 SAPS members took their own lives, and there have been a staggering total of 300 police suicides since 2018.
Member of the SA Society of Psychiatrists, Doctor Wisani Makhomisane, says post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the mental health illnesses contributing to the high suicide rate.
