Cameroon’s opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary has declared himself the winner of the October 12 presidential election, saying he will not accept what he describes as a stolen vote.
The official results are expected to be released on Monday.
Bakary told the BBC that his campaign had gathered results from polling stations across the country, giving his team what he called a clear and reliable picture of the outcome. “We have the figures; there is no doubt,” he said.
The 76-year-old politician, a former government Minister, broke ranks with President Paul Biya, who at 92 is seeking another term after 43 years in power.
Members of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement have rejected Bakary’s claim of victory, arguing that it is unlawful since only the Constitutional Council has the mandate to declare official results.
The declaration has added to growing political tension as Cameroonians await confirmation of the official outcome.
