Cameroon is bracing for the official announcement of election results this Sunday, following a heated contest that has sparked political tension. Opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary has declared himself the winner of the October 12 vote, saying his team’s own tally of results from polling stations shows a clear victory.
The 76-year-old, once a government Minister, broke away from President Paul Biya’s long-standing administration. Biya, now 92, is seeking another term after more than four decades in power.
Bakary’s declaration has been dismissed by the ruling party, with officials warning that only the Constitutional Council has the legal authority to release final results.
