The committee was established following allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system. The allegations were made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, in July. Mathale will be the sixth witness to appear before the committee.
He has been the deputy minister of Police since 2019. He served under Bheki Cele’s tenure as minister and is also expected to shed light on the functioning of the Political Killings Task Team.
The same team that was disbanded by now placed on special leave Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu. Last week Cele told the committee that no decision was ever made to disband the team. But Mchunu’s version was that when he came into office, the decision for disbandment was made, but just not implemented.
