Scattered protests broke out in parts of Tanzania today as citizens headed to the polls in a general election overshadowed by the absence of major opposition candidates.
Crowds in areas such as Ubungo, Mbeya and Tunduma voiced anger over the detention of CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu and the disqualification of ACT Wazalendo’s Luhaga Mpina, both of whom were barred from standing for the Presidency.
Security has been tightened across key urban centres, with the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (JWTZ) and police patrols stationed near polling stations. Witnesses reported the presence of tanks and armed personnel in several districts.
