The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has admitted that one of its biggest challenges remains ensuring that its recommendations are properly implemented. The body says it is working to improve follow-up measures after growing concerns that limited enforcement has eroded public confidence in its work.
As the Commission marks its 30th anniversary, Commissioner Sandra Makoasha says the milestone offers an opportunity to take stock of achievements while confronting areas that still need attention.
“We’ve heard from civil organisations again criticising the Commission for its absence and shortcomings, but also giving us solutions to take forward,” she said. “Part of our 30th anniversary is also about honouring those who have contributed immensely to the human rights cause, our defenders across SA.”
Makoasha added that the SAHRC continues to play a central role in advancing civil and human rights at both regional and international levels, noting that SA remains an active voice in global human rights discussions.
