Health experts are warning that South Africa (SA) could see a dramatic increase in dementia cases

Health experts are warning that South Africa (SA) could see a dramatic increase in dementia cases over the next three decades. The Global Burden of Disease project predicts a 181% rise by 2050, almost three times the current number of people affected.

Neurologists say the country’s ageing population and longer life expectancy are major factors behind the trend. Alzheimer’s disease is currently the most common form of dementia, with treatment focused on improving patients’ cognitive reserves.

Dr Harsha Patel explained that the second most common type, vascular dementia, is more preventable. Risk factors such as high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, and a sedentary lifestyle can be addressed to help reduce future cases.

“If we tackle these vascular risk factors now, we could lessen the burden of vascular dementia in years to come,” Patel said.
