AU Commissioner for Agriculture, Moses Vilakati, has called for greater collective efforts to combat hunger across the continent

The African Union’s (AU) Commissioner for Agriculture, Moses Vilakati, has called for greater collective efforts to combat hunger across the continent.

Speaking at the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) summit in Kigali, Rwanda, Vilakati said it was deeply concerning that Africa continues to struggle with malnutrition and food insecurity despite its vast arable land.

The AU has revealed that nearly 300 million people across the continent are currently facing hunger. Vilakati noted that Africa’s agricultural potential is being undermined by rising food inflation, climate change, and conflicts in certain regions, which have disrupted production and trade.

The CAADP summit has brought together farmers, experts and policymakers to explore solutions aimed at strengthening agriculture as a driver of food security, economic growth, and intra-African trade.
