The Democratic Alliance (DA) in South Africa’s (SA) capital city, Tshwane, has raised alarm over a Typhoid outbreak in the city, following reports that several people have been hospitalised.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed that it is investigating a surge in Typhoid cases in the capital. The bacterial infection, caused by Salmonella Typhi, is typically spread through contaminated food or water.

While the National Health Department has assured the public that the situation is under control, it has urged residents to remain vigilant, maintain good hygiene practices, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or abdominal pain.

Tshwane DA Councillor Cilliers Brink said the city’s administration must act quickly to prevent further spread of the disease.

“The Typhoid spike has to be carefully controlled. We call on the City to release the results of routine tests done on the Roodeplaat–Apies River–Rietvlei Dam water system to ensure that the source of Typhoid is not, in fact, the City’s water system, and to take other measures to prevent the spread of Typhoid,” Brink said.

The City of Tshwane has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the outbreak or the status of its water testing.
