Two Nobel Prize-winning authors, South Africa’s (SA) JM Coetzee and Tanzania’s Abdulrazak Gurnah, are in Stellenbosch this week for the fifth Nobel in Africa Symposium, hosted by Stellenbosch University.

The event, taking place at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study, begins today and will bring together around 50 of the world’s leading scholars and writers in African literature. The highlight of the symposium will be the “Africa Writes the World” lecture, to be delivered by the two laureates.

Stellenbosch University Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, said the gathering underscores the institution’s growing role in advancing global scholarship from an African perspective.

“This is the only institution outside Scandinavia to host a Nobel Symposium on behalf of the Nobel Foundation,” Ramjugernath said. “The hosting of this auspicious symposium, which brings together some of the greatest minds in the world, shows that Stellenbosch University is not just a university in Africa, but a university for Africa.”

He added that the symposium provides a unique opportunity to highlight Africa’s contribution to global research and literary excellence, while fostering collaboration across borders.

The Nobel in Africa Series aims to promote intellectual exchange and elevate Africa’s voice in global academic and literary discourse, with this year’s focus celebrating the continent’s creative influence and literary heritage.
