South Africa’s (SA) women’s cricket captain Laura Wolvaardt says the Proteas are closer than ever to winning an ICC World Cup, following their third consecutive final appearance across different formats.
The statement comes after SA was edged out by co-host India, who claimed the 50-over ICC Women’s World Cup title by 52 runs in Mumbai on Sunday. Despite the loss, Wolvaardt praised the team’s growth in depth and character over the past three finals.
“Reaching three finals in a row shows that we are doing something right both domestically and as a squad,” Wolvaardt said at the post-match press conference. “We are consistently making finals now, whereas before it might have been a one-time thing. I’m really proud of the team, and hopefully we can keep reaching finals and one day win one.”
The Proteas Women have steadily risen on the global stage, with domestic contracts and increased exposure helping to strengthen the squad. Wolvaardt says these developments are key to building the experience and resilience needed to finally secure a World Cup title.
