South Africa’s (SA) Electoral Commission Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Shiburi has confirmed that electronic voting is not feasible for next year’s local government elections.
This follows over two hundred submissions from the public in September, with many suggesting that a successful system would require a hybrid model, combining e-voting with traditional paper ballots.
Shiburi briefed the media today on the measures in place to ensure the 2026 local government elections run smoothly.
He has encouraged the strive towards a more digital nation, saying these submissions will be sent to parliament for consideration.
