The Gambian government has issued a clear warning to exiled former President Yahya Jammeh regarding his anticipated return to the country. Jammeh, who ruled for more than two decades, faces allegations of corruption and crimes against humanity from his time in office.
Political scientist and conflict resolution specialist Dr David Matsanga commented on the matter, stressing the importance of reconciliation for the nation’s stability. He suggested that Jammeh could be allowed to return under a framework that combines forgiveness with accountability, enabling Gambia to move forward while addressing past grievances.
“Reconciliation is vital,” Matsanga said. “Retributive justice should not prevent the country from progressing. It is possible for former leaders to come back in a way that acknowledges past wrongs while promoting unity and stability.”
