Former Zambia captain Christopher Katongo has expressed confidence that South African (SA) Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs can finally break North African dominance in this season’s African Football Confederation (CAF) interclub competitions.
Speaking at the draw for the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup in Johannesburg, where Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch FC, and Mamelodi Sundowns discovered their group-stage opponents, Katongo said the PSL sides have the experience and squad depth to compete at the highest level. He assisted former Cameroon and Arsenal midfielder Alex Song in conducting the draw.
“I believe SA has the edge and has been steadily improving through regular participation in the Champions League and Confederation Cup,” Katongo said. “The exposure to international matches helps players and strengthens the national team. For Zambia, it will be more challenging, as it has been a long time since our clubs competed in these tournaments.”
