The Randburg Magistrate’s Court, north of the South African (SA) Johannesburg, is expected to deliver judgment on Thursday in the matter of the eight former members of Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s VIP Protection Unit
The group brought an application to have charges against them dropped. The officers are all currently out on $574 bail each.
In July 2023, a video emerged showing police officers allegedly assaulting occupants of a vehicle on the N1 Highway.
The VIP protection officers were captured on video brandishing rifles and assaulting the trainee soldiers who were occupants of a VW Polo on the N1 highway in the city.
The victims alleged that the accused aggressively forced them to the side of the highway, before breaking their car window and assaulting them whilst brandishing firearms.
All the accused face several charges, including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless and negligent driving, malicious damage to property and the obstruction of justice.
