An official in Ethiopia’s Tigray region says the central government has carried out a drone strike targeting former rebel forces

An official in Ethiopia’s Tigray region says the central government has carried out a drone strike targeting former rebel forces, sparking renewed fears of conflict in the country’s north.

This marks the first reported confrontation between the government and Tigrayan forces since the two sides signed a peace accord three years ago, ending one of Africa’s deadliest wars.

A senior Tigrayan military official told the BBC that the strike caused minimal damage. However, the Ethiopian government has not commented, and the BBC says it has not independently verified the report.

On Thursday, officials in the neighbouring Afar region accused Tigrayan fighters of crossing the border and violating the peace agreement, raising concerns that the fragile truce could unravel.
