South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in Rome, Italy, for a working visit to the Holy See.
According to the Presidency, the visit offers an opportunity to deepen co-operation with the Vatican on humanitarian aid, climate justice, emergency response, and peacebuilding.
The Holy See maintains diplomatic ties with more than 180 countries and holds observer status at major international institutions, including the United Nations.
SA and the Holy See have shared diplomatic relations since 1994. Ramaphosa’s meeting with Pope Leo XIV marks SA’s first high-level engagement with the newly appointed Pontiff.
He is accompanied by the Minister of International Relations and Co-operation, Ronald Lamola.
