Sudanese government has asked the international community to provide firm guarantees that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will honour a proposed ceasefire

The Sudanese government has asked the international community to provide firm guarantees that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will honour a proposed ceasefire before committing to it.

The call comes amid reports of renewed fighting in Khartoum, where drone strikes were heard near an army-controlled military base and a power station. The latest violence has dampened hopes for a temporary halt in hostilities.

According to the BBC, there has been no response from the Sudanese army since the RSF said it would accept the truce on Thursday night. The army has repeatedly declined to join peace talks, insisting it will not negotiate with what it describes as a “terrorist militia.” Officials have also voiced anger over the perception that mediators treat the RSF and the army as equals.

Earlier this week, Army Chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said his forces would continue their efforts to defeat the RSF. Despite the RSF’s stated willingness to abide by the ceasefire, reports from Khartoum on Friday indicated that its fighters have yet to observe it

The conflict between the army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has devastated large parts of Sudan and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, forcing millions from their homes and leaving cities in ruins.
