South Africa’s (SA) embattled Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has offered to withdraw from all African National Congress (ANC) activities, but the party has turned down his request.
Mchunu, who sits on the ANC’s National Executive and Working Committees (NWC), is currently on special leave following allegations of political interference and links to criminal syndicates.
The claims, made by Police Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, are now under investigation by Parliament and the Madlanga Judicial Commission.
His Spokesperson, Sithembiso Mshengu, confirmed that the ANC leadership had refused Mchunu’s offer to step aside, saying he had not been formally charged.
“Indeed, Mchunu did offer to step aside from all ANC organisational processes. The NWC rejected his request on the grounds that he has not yet been charged in any court in the Republic of SA,” Mshengu said.
