Guinea-Bissau is entering a crucial phase ahead of its legislative and presidential elections

Guinea-Bissau is entering a crucial phase ahead of its legislative and presidential elections, set for November 23.

With campaigning now in its second week, political temperatures are rising as presidential contenders intensify their outreach, particularly in rural areas.

Incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, seeking a second term, has been touting his record, describing his leadership as one defined by “truth” and modernisation. His main challenger, Fernando Dias, supported by a faction of the historic PAIGC party, is calling for “freedom” and sweeping political change.

Observers say the election will test the country’s fragile stability, following years of political deadlock and institutional disputes.

Luís Peti, Spokesperson for the PAIGC Lawyers’ Collective, said the stakes are high for Guinea-Bissau’s democracy. “This election is not only about leadership; it’s about restoring faith in democratic institutions,” he said. “What we need now is transparency, respect for the rule of law, and a peaceful transition, regardless of who wins.”

As campaigning gains momentum, the Electoral Commission has urged all parties to ensure calm and avoid inflammatory rhetoric.
